Real estate investors large and small play a significant role in today’s market.  Many new investors have entered the market, seeking to buy in and build up a real estate portfolio when prices are lower.  These investors benefit the market in multiple ways.  First, they have the ability to acquire the inventory which is presently in the hands of banks.  Second, their ability to offer financing options such as contracts for deed or lease options (which banks simply cannot due to regulatory oversight which discourages long-term ownership of real estate) provides a means for some to re-enter the housing market post-foreclosure.
