“3 And Out”: Johnnies Dominate Bethel, Tommies Idle…and the Gophers Suffer the “Ann Arbor Screwjob”, The BS Show with Bob Sansevere, 9.30.24
Every Monday during college football season on The BS Show with Bob Sansevere, Bob and I devote our 3 And Out Segment to a recap of Minnesota’s two Division I teams – the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers and the University of St. Thomas Tommies – and its best non-Division I team, the St. John’s University Johnnies.
This past weekend, the Johnnies won big on the road against their only real competition in the MIAC, the Bethel Royals. The win positions the Johnnies nicely for the season and, as Bob and I discussed, it’s hard to find a game on their schedule that looks like it could be a loss.
My alma mater, St. Thomas, was idle, but the Gophers’ experience in Ann Arbor, Michigan on Saturday gave us plenty to talk about. The Gophers clawed their way back to within three points against No. 12 Michigan and opted for the onsides kick. What appeared to be a Gophers recovery was nullified by an apparent offsides penalty against the Gophers…except that no Gophers player was ahead of the ball at the time of the kick:
It certainly appears that the officials simply found a way to help Michigan escape a potential loss to the lowly Gophers, and it had me thinking back to the infamous “Montreal Screwjob” of WWE fame. Hence I’m calling what happened in Ann Arbor to the Gophers Saturday as the “Ann Arbor Screwjob”. We also touched on Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s visit to the game…and the fans’ reactions to him.
We also did a brief recap of the Vikings’ closer than it needed to be victory over the arch rival Green Bay Packers.
