“3 And Out”: Johnnies Fall in Upset, Bethel Moves On, and the Gophers Headed to the “Mayo Bowl”, The BS Show With Bob Sansevere, 12.9.24
Every Monday during college football season on The BS Show with Bob Sansevere, Bob and I devote our 3 And Out segment to a recap of Minnesota’s two Division I teams – the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers and the University of St. Thomas Tommies – and its best non-Division I team, the St. John’s University Johnnies.
This week, we had to make some adjustments. With both the Gophers and the Tommies having wrapped up their regular season schedules (more on the Gophers’ postseason activities in a moment), our lone 3 And Out regularly featured team active last weekend was the undefeated Johnnies, who were 14 point favorites at home vs. Susquehanna. Unfortunately, the Johnnies came up short, losing in an upset as Susquehanna kicked a last second field goal to advance to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III football playoffs. Their opponent in the next round? None other than the Bethel University Royals, who upset Wartburg to advance (and thus calling into question our oft-repeated claim that the Johnnies are Minnesota’s best non Division I football team). In any event, we wish Bethel well as they travel to Susquehanna for another tough matchup.
Back to our Golden Gophers. They’ll be playing Virginia Tech on January 3, in the (wait for it) Duke’s Mayo Bowl. Bob and I discussed at length whether Gophers Coach PJ Fleck gets a tub of Duke’s Mayo dumped on him in lieu of Gatorade if the Gophers win. We’ll see I guess.
