The BS Show – “3 And Out”, 10.16.23: Johnnies Throttle Carleton, Tommies Beaten by Drake, and Gophers-Tommies Hockey Rivalry is Born

Every Monday during college football season on The BS Show with Bob Sansevere, Bob and I devote our 3 And Out Segment to a recap of Minnesota’s two Division I teams – the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers and the University of St. Thomas Tommies – and its best non-Division I team, the St. John’s University Johnnies.

This past weekend, the Johnnies beat Carleton 63-7 after a week which saw Carleton touting its undefeated status and claiming to be the #1 team in the MIAC. Not anymore.

The Gophers were idle but face a tough match next weekend against No. 24 Iowa.

And then there were the Tommies. Heavily favored to beat the Drake University Bulldogs, they inexplicably lost badly, 52-21.

The Tommies’ loss had me bringing donuts to the office this morning. My partner, Emeric Dwyer, is a Drake alum, and when St. Thomas moved up to D-1 and our football teams found themselves rivals in the Pioneer League, we dubbed this game the “Chestnut Cambronne Bowl” with the proviso that the loser brings donuts in for the firm on Monday morning. Either way, it’s a win-win for our colleagues.

We also talked about college hockey’s newest rivalry; namely, the Gophers vs. the Tommies. On Friday night, in front of a enthusiastic Xcel Energy Center crowd, the No. 1 ranked Gophers needed overtime to defeat the Tommies, and the next night at 3M Arena, they took the 2nd game, 3-0. The progress which UST has made already is making Minnesota college hockey fun again, and I’m still holding out hope that we can one day get an all Minnesota Frozen Four given the number of competitive programs here in the state.
